RV Insulation Materials Compared: MPP vs Polyurethane vs XPS vs Fiberglass

September 6, 2026 · By HOTECH Engineering Team

Why RV Insulation Matters

Insulation is the invisible feature that determines whether your RV is comfortable in all seasons or only usable in perfect weather. Poor insulation means excessive AC/heating costs, condensation problems, and an unpleasant interior environment. For refrigerated truck bodies, insulation directly affects cargo safety and energy costs. The material choice has permanent consequences — it is built into the walls and cannot be easily replaced.

Insulation Materials Compared

MaterialR-Value/inchWeightMoistureStructural?Food-Safe?
MPP (Micro-foamed PP)R-4.5 to R-5.0LightImmuneYesYes
Polyurethane (PU) FoamR-6.0 to R-7.0LightGood (closed-cell)PartialNo
XPS (Extruded Polystyrene)R-5.0LightGoodNoNo
Fiberglass BattsR-3.0 to R-3.5MediumPoor (absorbs)NoNo

MPP panels are the only insulation material that is simultaneously structural, waterproof, and food-safe — eliminating the need for separate insulation and structural layers.

MPP: The Emerging Standard for Reefer Bodies

MPP (Micro-foamed Polypropylene) is our proprietary insulation technology using supercritical CO₂ to create millions of uniform micro-cells within a polypropylene matrix. Unlike polyurethane which uses chemical blowing agents, MPP uses only CO₂ — making it completely food-safe and environmentally clean. The key advantage of MPP over traditional PU foam is that it is structural: MPP panels carry loads while insulating, eliminating the need for a separate structural panel layer and reducing total wall thickness by 20-30%.

R-Value Is Not the Whole Story

While polyurethane foam has the highest R-value per inch, R-value alone does not determine real-world insulation performance. Factors like thermal bridging (heat conduction through panel joints and fasteners), air infiltration (gaps and seams), and moisture accumulation (wet insulation loses R-value) often matter more than the raw R-value number. MPP panels with precision-machined joints and continuous thermal breaks can outperform higher-R-value PU foam panels that have poorly sealed joints.

Choosing the Right Insulation for Your Application

For RV walls and roofs: XPS foam boards or PU spray foam are cost-effective for recreational use. For refrigerated truck bodies: MPP panels are the optimal choice — structural + insulating + food-safe in one panel, reducing total build complexity. For cold storage facilities: PU sandwich panels remain dominant due to the highest R-value at reasonable cost. For camper van conversions: XPS boards are the DIY-friendly option, easy to cut and install without professional tools.
